Blevins Dentistry practices conservative dentistry. This means that we avoid tooth extractions whenever possible so we can preserve a maximum amount of natural tooth structure.
However, if your tooth cannot be saved, you can count on Dr. Blevins to provide a gentle tooth extraction.
When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
Sometimes, tooth extraction is your only option.
For example, tooth extraction may be necessary if:
- Your wisdom teeth need to be removed: These are the four molars in the far back of your mouth. Wisdom teeth often can’t come in correctly due to lack of room or wrong position. We refer to these as impacted wisdom teeth, and tooth extraction is often the best course of action to deal with them.
- A dental abscess has developed: An abscess is a pocket of infection near your tooth. Typically, root canal therapy can drain an abscess and save the tooth. However, if the infection is too severe, tooth extraction is necessary.
- You are getting dentures or dental implants: These restorative procedures may require one or more weak or unhealthy teeth to be removed so we can replace them with stronger, artificial teeth. That way, you can smile, eat, and speak with confidence again.
- You have a severely decayed tooth: We use crowns and fillings to deal with cavities. However, if these options aren’t sufficient, tooth extraction may be the only option.
What to Expect
The idea of tooth extraction can cause anxiety for some patients. However, you can rest assured that Blevins Dentistry makes the safety and comfort of our patients our first priority.
For example, we offer laughing gas and oral sedation to our patients. That way, you can feel relaxed and at ease for your appointment.
